Have you ever gone shopping and seen a beautiful blouse with great detail on it, but were afraid of buying it because you had no clue how to wear it?
Kind of sucks doesn’t it?!
Yeah it does, and I totally understand because I’ve been there many, many times. That was until I realized shirts with detail can be dressed up or down when paired with the right bottoms, shoes and accessories.
Being that the summer is still in full swing, I wanted to give my fav ways of wearing a transitional wardrobe staple day or night. Just in case you’re not sure, detailing on a blouse includes any embellishment beyond the color, fabric or basic silhouette of the shirt itself. Some of the most common details found on blouses include:
- sequins or crystals
- floral details
- tailoring details (such as pintucks and pleats)
- 3D details (ribbon, bows, and beading).
Stylist Fashion Tip #1: Play with Shapes
Whenever you’re looking to add interest to your wardrobe in a single piece, a shirt with detailing is a safe bet. To take the style factor up another notch, play with shapes in the type of shirt you choose. Shapes that have a lot of interest include:
- peasant-style tops,
- empire waist tops,
- crop tops,
- peplum tops,
- kimono style tops, and
- blouson blouses.
If you can find a top in any of these shapes with great detailing as well, and you have found a statement piece that can likely work in casual or dressier looks.
Stylist Fashion Tip #2: Play with Shades & Tints
For the surest way to create a lot of impact without overshadowing the shirt with detailing, pick a color you like and play with different shades (any color + black or grey) and tints (any color + white) of that color. This works best with all colors except red because tints of red (pink) have their own range of complexities.
Simple example of this are a purple slip dress paired with a lilac embroidered cardigan or a periwinkle peplum top paired with navy tapered trousers.
Stylist Fashion Tip #3: Go Monochromatic Dramatic
This has to be one of my favorite style tricks when I really want to emphasize one or two aspects of a look. A monochromatic color scheme by default makes you pay attention to everything that isn’t the main color. Don’t believe me? Think of how you’ll turn heads wearing white skinny jeans, white patent leather clutch, white stiletto sandals (you know I’m obsessed with stilettos), and a sleeveless white blouse with dramatic black bow details. Get the point. Every eye will automatically be drawn to the bow details of your sleeveless blouse since it’s both a three-dimensional detail and it’s in a color other than white.
Stylist Fashion Tip #4: Crop It!
With crop tops being a hot trend at the moment, this is a perfect way to wear two trends in one! A great crop top with detailing such as bows, pleats or crystals can be played up or down depending on the bottoms you pair with it. For an easy casual look, pair a sporty crop top with colorblocking with a pair of leggings in the darkest color in the top and designer hi tops. To make this look a little more formal, pair a black long sleeve blouse crop top with tailoring detail with a pair of black palazzo pants and statement pumps.
Stylist Fashion Tip #5: Make Casual More Feminine
If you can’t tell by now, one of my favorite shirting details is bows. This, along with any other shirting detail mentioned above, can help to make your everyday casual just a little more “ladylike”. Keep the shapes simple if you go this route and pair a cap sleeve polo-style top with detailing with a pair of cuffed boyfriend jeans and a coordinating pair of flats or ankle strap pumps.
Here are five simple ways to incorporate a shirt with detailing into your wardrobe. And this is a worthy investment as this single piece will likely be able to transition through different seasons.
So how would you wear a shirt with chic detailing?
